Relish Kids Cooking Camp

Does your child love to cook? Does he watch cooking shows and make a recipe right after? Does she ask if she can make dinner by herself? Do they like to talk about food and read cookbooks? We have the camp for you.

This Relish Kids Cooking Camp will run from August 5 through August 9th, Monday through Friday. And every day, your kid will be with us from 9 to 3. That means we teach them, we feed them, we let them play, and they cook.

This time together allows the kids to dive deep into the some of the most important lessons of cooking. We will teach them how to truly taste and season and play. They will also learn essential techniques beyond the specific recipes that they can carry forward into your kitchen. And they will practice their knife skills and improvise within a clear structure in our kitchen.

We will be cooking around the world for the week.

On Monday, we will start with France. We will learn how to sauté, sear, and make sauces. We will also talk about what makes a good menu — foods that work well together and how to make a well-paced meal. And then we'll prepare a French picnic and take it outside to enjoy together.

On Tuesday, we will be visiting Italy. We will make homemade pasta, pizza dough, and antipasti. And then we'll cook them up together and have a giant Italian feast.

On Wednesday, we will have a Mexican feast. The kids will make tortillas, guacamole, pickled carrots, enchiladas, and all the makings of a taco feast. We will eat well and learn the basics of good cooking at the same time.

On Thursday, we're going to Thailand. They will learn how to make massaman curry, kao tom, pad Thai, and mango sticky rice. We will also use this day to talk about the flavors and spices that make each culture's cuisine itself.

We end on Friday with a southern cookout. We will make ribs, pulled pork, cornbread, potato salad, mac and cheese, collard greens, black-eyed peas, and peach cobbler. On this day, the kids will work in teams to each make two dishes. And we end the week with a celebratory feast.

This camp will be taught by Jacob Wiegner (chef and former owner of Blackboard Bistro in West Seattle), Dan Ahern (chef and cookbook author), Shauna Ahern (resident Relish teacher and cookbook author) as well as visits and mini-lessons from island chefs.

Your student will come home happy, well-fed, and ready to cook for you.
